Professor Huseyn Baghirov, Chairman, Board of Trustees of Western Caspian University led a team on
the Azerbaijan-Antarctic expedition to explore the Antarctic mainland.
The expedition made more than five hundred meteorological observations in Antarctica, and the variety of rock
and mineral samples led to many interesting ideas about the experimental research and pilot research in the laboratory.
The data acquired was examined in conjunction with the latest analysis of species, geological structure, tectonics,
and magnetism of the continent.
Professor Baghirov was the first representative of a Muslim state to place a flag on Mount Vinson, the highest peak
in Antarctica, placing the flag of Azerbaijan. This fact has been documented in the following books:
‘Climate of Antarctica- Global impact’, ‘Diary of Antarctica’, and ‘Frozen Part of Hondva’.
On August 10, 2009 under the leadership of Huseyn Baghirov, Chairman of the WCU Department of Guardians,
the first Azerbaijan-Africa Expedition set out. During the Expedition,
scientific data regarding the geography and biodiversity of Africa was gathered.
The research that the Azerbaijan-Africa scientific expedition made has been very valuable for the scientific community of Azerbaijan.
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain on the African continent. Uhuru peak (5895m), which the expedition climbed, is the highest point of the Kibo Volcano on Kilimanjaro.
One aim of this expedition was to plant the flag of Azerbaijan on this peak, which was done successfully.
In 2010, an expedition successfully completed an ascent to the highest point of Argentina,
the top of Akonkagua Mountain (6962m). The members of the expedition placed the national
flag of Azerbaijan and a pendant with the words of the Azerbaijan state national leader, H. Aliyev, "I am proud that I am Azerbaijanian” at the top.
The data acquired by the Azerbaijani-South American scientific expedition today provides direct access
to extensive knowledge and information about many inaccessible areas of the continent and in particular, its rich biological diversity.
The expedition also deployed banners with the words ‘2010- the Year of Ecology in Azerbaijan in the Name of a Green World’ in both Azerbaijani and English.
